FSSAI has issued an advisory on compliance for labelling requirement on Health Supplement, Nutraceuticals, Foods for Special Dietary Use(FSDU), Foods for Special Medical Purpose(FSMP), Functional Foods and Novel Foods products.
These food products are covered under FSS(Food or Health Supplement, Nutraceuticals, Foods for Special Dietary Use(FSDU), Foods for Special Medical Purpose(FSMP), Functional Foods and Novel Foods) regulations, 2016.
Food articles covered under these regulations are required to comply with general labelling requirements under the FSS(Packaging and Labelling)Regulations, 2011.
Besides the compliance of general labelling requirements, these food products also need to showcase sufficient information related with nature and purpose of the food article, detailed instructions and precautions for its use, the targeted consumer group and physiological or disease conditions which they address and recommended duration of use.
The above-required information should properly be displayed on the label, accompanying leaflet or other labelling or advertisement of each type of article of food.
Besides these, each product labelling must also comply with the other labelling provisions specified in the aforesaid FSS regulations for specific food categories.
FSSAI has directed all it’s offices to ensure strict compliance of labelling provisions specified in the FSS regulations for under their jurisdiction.
