FSSAI Withdraws Directions in Respect to Prohibition of Blending in Mustard Oil

Through a notification dated 4 December 2020 the FSSAI has withdrawn its direction dated 23 September 2020 regarding operationalisation of Draft Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Amendment Regulations, 2020 with respect to Prohibition of Blending in Mustard Oil.

Through its directions dated 23 September 2020 the FSSAI had operationalised the draft Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Amendment Regulations 2020 wherein the manufacturing and sale of Blended edible vegetable oil with mustard oil as an ingredient had been prohibited with effect from 1 October 2020.

The directions dated 23 September, 2020 had been operationalised after the Government of India had directed the FSSAI to prohibit blending in mustard oil. The Government had asked the FSSAI to facilitate the manufacture and sale of pure mustard oil for domestic consumption in public interest. Even though FSSAI had operationalised these amendments at the draft stage, the FSSAI had sought views of stakeholders on the regulations.

After due consideration of the representations received from stakeholders the FSSAI has decided to withdraw the directions dated 23 September 2020 for operationalisation of the Draft Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Amendment Regulations 2020.
