FSSAI has revised the rules for the packaging material for the drinking water. After the recommendation of National Green Tribunal regarding the reduction of usage of plastic and managing the plastic waste FSSAI has included new guidelines for the food-grade packaging materials.
Under the new guidelines included, other food-grade packaging material compatible with water may also be used. Also, bottles made from these materials need not be necessarily transparent.
Moreover, new migration limit(The transfer of chemical contaminants from food contact materials into food is called migration. ) has also been laid down under Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Amendments Regulations,2020.
Following are the new inclusion :

The draft regulation is in the process of being notified till then FBO’s shall follow the revised regulations and enforcement of these regulations shall commence after 6 months from the date of issuance of final notification.
