FSSAI Operationalises Draft Amendments for Alcohol Free Beer and Distilled Spirituous Beverages

In the exercise of its power, the FSSAI has framed the draft Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Amendment Regulations, 2020 and draft Food Safety and Standards (Food product Standards and Food Additive) Amendment Regulations, 2020.

These draft regulations are in the process of being notified and the process of draft notification, consideration of comments, if any that may have been received, and the finalization of these regulations are likely to take some time. Therefore, keeping in mind the technical need of certain provisions available in the above said drafts with regard to Alcohol-free Beer Use of certain food colour in Distilled Spirituous Beverages

The FSSAI has decided to operationalise the provisions related to these products.

The FSSAI has given notice for the operationalisation of draft Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Amendment Regulations. 2020 from June 2020.  These regulations will come into force on the date of their final publication in the Official Gazette.

In the Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Regulations, 2018, –

Under Part-4 of the above regulation in the category 4.1 related to “Beer” FSSAI has added one more classification. Beer is classified depending on the alcohol content in it. After the two already classified beer (Regular or Mild Beer and Strong Beer) in the regulations the FSSAI has added a new beer classification which is as follows:

(iii) Alcohol-free beer- Abv 0.0 (for other parameters, alcohol-free beer shall comply with the limits specified for regular beer).
